Hard to say, as you point out they vary in one degree or another, which is a cool thing in my book. Nobody has mentioned 3/2/69 yet, the one from Live Dead (and the Fillmore 69 box) which we can’t stream anymore, but that version is pretty much etched into my consciousness.

First of all let me grant that none of the four versions done 1989-90 are gonna compare to 69 or 68. But to witness the return of a song - after twenty years! - well this always made for a special night. I was at the first, Shoreline 9/29/89, in fact all four, but this night with Formerly The Warlocks in Hampton stands out as quite memorable for me. The return of Dark Star (5 years) and Attics (17 years) didn’t hurt either. I recognize that many take issue regarding these latter performances, and I’m not sure about him sharing the vocals, but Jerry’s aged voice fits the tune, and he tears up the short guitar solo.

Agree with the 10/9/89 version 100%.
VERY powerful.
I think it would of been even more so if Jerry did all the vocals. His aging voice did suit this tune.

Heh – I actually thought Brent’s contribution was fine, but that didn’t seem like an appropriate observation in this thread ...

Don't get me wrong - I loved Brent's vocals. I just thought that Jerry doing the whole song would have carried more weight.
But, on the other hand, Brent could of done all the vocals and that would of fit too. He could of really nailed that song. Fit his persona...
